With several reasons, my classmate Read argues against physician assisted suicide. He claims that an individual should not  be given the option of suicide despite pain and medical bills as long because the individual must continue to fight in order to spend more time with loved ones. However, I disagree with his article. I believe that in the case of a life terminating, painful, costly illness, the patient should be given the ability to choose either a quick death or months of painful and expensive surgery and radiation.

Individuals who have never experienced the pain of life terminating illness cannot claim that assisted suicide is more harmful. Yes, assisted suicide shortens the lifespan of the individual, but it also provides a better quality of life. No doubt, it’s painful for the loved ones to watch the patient choose to die, but it could be arguably more painful to watch the patient suffer and then inevitably die. Ultimately, should the patient have an illness that would almost certainly result in death, the patient should be allowed to have physician assisted suicide.
